We take our first dip of the season and test out Selsey's water temperature in preparation for our first meet up on Saturday 25th May at 4.30pm
It's Easter weekend and the weather is remarkably warm here on the South Coast. So I decide that it's time to brave the waters off Selsey for the first time this year. It's a little chilly, of course, but nothing compared to the dip I took last week off the Pembrokeshire coast. There, the sea was almost too much to bear. My toes turned blue in protest, so much so that I did not stay in for long, deciding instead to wait for the warmer waters of the Solent.
And so, with the acceptable bathing season finally upon us, I will begin reaching out to neighbours and friends to tell them about this new idea of mine to build a community of people who share my dream of the using the sea as a reason to get together. There is something so natural about being in water. Even if it's cold as you get in, once your body adjusts, it's like you belong there.
And whilst I'd like to try and encourage people to get back into the water and experience the joy and health benefits sea swimming brings, the Selsey Sea Bathing Society is also about the simple pastime of just being near the sea and enjoying it in the good company of others. So if you like the idea of what we're about but prefer to come along to sit, watch, talk, share stories and enjoy the camaraderie, then we welcome you equally.
Our first meet up together will coincide with the Selsey Walking And Outdoor Festival 2019 and takes place on Saturday 25th May at 4.30pm with a swim and a few refreshments. We're just waiting to see tide times before deciding either to meet on West Beach or at our home on Clayton Road.
